What is Generation for Creation?
Generation for Creation is an inter-community visual and performing arts program for children ages 7-17, regardless of gifted ability, disability, special needs, race, or religion. Classes are taught bi-monthly at the
Boys and Girls Club
in Murfreesboro.
Performances, history plays, and holiday concerts are scheduled three times per year at local theatrical stages. The Children's Benefit Talent Show showcases talented children in four categories which include art, dance, drama, and music. All children receive a prize and the top three winning contestants are awarded with a trophy and monetary gift or savings bond.
How Did The Organization Get Started?
The organization began in April 2001. The Founder/Executive Director, Monica Sharee Johnson, a motivational and caring community advocate, was inspired to dedicate Generation for Creation on behalf of her deceased mother in order to keep her mother's love for children alive. Ms. Johnson was a shy child who wanted to be an actress; she was redirected to channel her dream elsewhere. She acquired a degree in psychology and a minor in speech and theatre, and biology. Five years later her dream of acting surfaced again. This time it was to help talented artistic children reach their dreams with encouragement and positive motivation. Ms. Johnson built a relationship with the Center for the Arts in 2001 and started teaching drama classes specialized for children with special needs. After the first production produced by Ms. Johnson, "Hilda, the Good-for-Nothing Bunny," it was discovered that it was better to incorporate all children for community harmony and to build talent and self-esteem in the students.
Where Does the Organization Get Funding?
Generation for Creation recently received a 501 (c) 3 status, which is an official non-profit organization. Ms. Johnson and private donations have made up the majority of funding, followed by program advertisements, ticket sales, and a grant from the Middle Tennessee Electric Customers Care, Inc.
